Romania International Farm Profile

Transhumance is the seasonal movement of livestock - in this instance from lowland plains to upland or mountain pastures.

Once a very widespread system of animal husbandry, transhumance has now in most European countries been relegated to a vestige of its past - and is now merely a colourful pageant staged for tourists' benefit. Yet in Romania, the practice continues with perhaps 10-15% of the national sheep flock migrating each year from their wintering quarters to the summer upland grazings high in the Carpathian mountains.
