Sussex Youngsters probe food origins

SussexPupils from two Sussex schools have gained an invaluable insight into the origins of their food, thanks to the NFU.

East Sussex NFU funded visits by two schools – West Rise Junior School, Eastbourne and St Martins CE Primary School, Brighton - to the rural education centre at Plumpton College, near Lewes.

Former East Sussex NFU chair Gillian van der Meer, from Ashburnham, near Battle helped to secure NFU funding for the school visits. She says: “It’s so important that young people develop from an early age an understanding of where their food comes from. These early, outdoor learning experiences will often stay with people for life. The NFU wants youngsters to grow up with a good grasp of food origins and a love of home-produced food. From that, you can then build their knowledge of cookery, nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.”

South East & Central Farming & Countryside Education (FACE) coordinator Louisa Devismes, based at Plumpton College, comments: “FACE are incredibly grateful for the invaluable and on-going support of the NFU, both at regional and national level. This enables us to fulfil our vital role of reconnecting young people with the origins of their food. The visits by these primary and junior school pupils to the farm at Plumpton College provided a memorable and meaningful learning experience for the youngsters.”

The visits took place during May 2013. To find out more about school visits to farms and horticultural units, log on to www.face-online.org.uk
