The National Pig herd has reduced considerably in recent years and there is a general concern in the industry that the general public will not want to pay the price for the high welfare standards, environmental protection, and traceability of animals that the industry now maintains. It is feared that the retail trade will be forced increasingly to source pigmeat abroad, where welfare standards are not so stringent and thus costs are lower.

Another worry is that the globalisation of trade may result in the accidental import of diseases to which National herd will have no resistance.
