Bright Crop

Careers in Farming and Food SupplyBright Crop is the first sector wide initiative focused on attracting the best and brightest into the food supply sector, from farm to processor.

It has been developed over the last year by a cross-industry working group chaired by David Yiend, Chief Executive, AB Agri and involving AIC, HSBC, NFU, RASE and Business in the Community.

With the increasing challenge of producing more food with fewer resources new talent is needed. The initiative seeks to engage the industry in raising awareness of inspiring careers opportunities amongst 11-19 year olds, their careers advisors and parents. It will provide a ‘one-stop shop’ for careers information, advice and guidance, and encourage the sector to engage in activities that promote it to young people.

Key Deliverables:

  1. A website that inspires young people to explore career opportunities across the entire sector
  2. Resources and careers-related activities for schools to enthuse young people and their career advisors
  3. A nationwide ambassadors programme for schools delivered through STEMNET to engage individuals working in the industry in promoting careers in the sector
  4. Partnership working with like minded organisations to ensure that users of the service are effectively signposted to more specific or local information, guidance and events.

Achievements so far:

• Industry recognising the need and actively supporting the initiative (NFU, AIC, RASE, Lantra, Landex, Agri-Skills Forum, NFYFC)
• Seed funding secured (with further sponsors and funders sought)
• Secretariat established within FACE
• Market research completed to provide a benchmark against which progress is measured and activity is shaped going forward
• Task group of industry experts ‘mapping’ careers opportunities across the sector
• Media partnership with Farmers Weekly in place.
